Vancouver International Airport has received top marks from the CAPA Centre for Aviation.

The airport, which is the second busiest in Canada behind Toronto’s Pearson International, was named the best airport in the world at the Aviation Awards in Amsterdam on Thursday.

“This is an incredible achievement and is a testament to YVR’s success and our growing influence on the world stage,” Craig Richmond, the airport’s president and CEO, said in a press release.

“We have achieved this milestone thanks to our focus on safety, teamwork, accountability, innovation and our community-based, not-for-profit governance model, under which we constantly improve the airport for our passengers, our partners and our communities.

Vancouver International Airport is the first airport in North America to claim the CAPA Centre for Aviation’s top award.

The organization commended YVR for several its creative business model, its role as an incubator for other companies, its uptick in routes and its efforts to create a more environmentally sustainable operation.

CAPA told Global News that it has seen a 32 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per passenger over the last ten years.

The airport has also boasted a 91 per cent customer-satisfaction rating for three years in a row.

This isn’t the first time the airport has been recognized for its excellence either.

It has been recognized by Skytrax as the best airport in North America six years running and cracked the organization’s list of top-10 airports between 2012 and 2014.

However, its most recent list was topped by Singapore’s Changi International Airport.
