Amber Heard has been slated over a ‘tone-deaf’ tweet, in which she suggested that her neighbours ‘drive home’ their foreign staff after hearing about an immigration checkpoint that had been set up near her house.

The Aquaman star took to Twitter last night, in the midst of the increasing crackdown on illegal immigration in the US.

In a now-deleted message, she said: “Just heard there’s an ICE checkpoint in hollywood, a few blocks from where I live. Everyone better give their housekeepers, nannies and landscapers a ride home tonight… — Amber Heard (@realamberheard).”

Suffice to say her presumption didn’t go down at all well, some branding her remark to be flat-out racist.

But others were open to the notion that perhaps there was an almost undetectable layer of biting social commentary somewhere in there.

Maybe there should be a special font for ‘biting social commentary’ so that such remarks aren’t misconstrued in the future.

After all, she did later post this:

Heard was also recently in her home state of Texas protesting against the separation of immigrant families at the border, a scandal which has engulfed Donald Trump’s administration.

Law is meant to protect and defend justice, not destroy it.

During the trip, she wore a t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan ‘Yes, I do care. Do you?’ in Spanish, a swipe at First Lady Melania Trump’s now infamous choice to wear a jacket with the words ‘I don’t really care, do u?’ on a visit to a detention centre in Texas last month.

So while Heard may not have intended offence, it all could have been worded rather better.
