Toronto Porsche driver opts for sidewalk instead of road

Ask any resident of the Big Smoke: driving in Toronto is no picnic. But even though the traffic is terrible and drivers can be less than courteous, most of them manage to stay on the road.

For one driver, staying between the yellow lines was apparently too tall an order, because a Porsche Cayenne was recently spotted driving at a leisurely pace down the sidewalk on Toronto’s Simcoe St.

In a 15-second video shot on February 12 and posted to YouTube two days later, the $100,000 vehicle can clearly be seen cruising north up the sidewalk on Simcoe St. towards Richmond St., a green bike lane separating the Porsche from the actual traffic-clogged road. The clip was posted by a user named lemurvision, along with the tagline, “Because why share the road with other drivers for 30 metres?”

So what possessed this motorist to ignore the rules of the road and jump the curb? While some YouTube commenters hypothesized that the driver simply believes fancy cars like Porches are above the law, others pointed out that it is a particularly confusing stretch of road and that perhaps it was an honest mistake.

CityNews points out that it’s possible the driver pulled out of the Shangri-La Hotel, got confused by the bike lane and adjacent one way traffic, and then turned onto the sidewalk thinking it was a lane heading north. Then once on the sidewalk, he or she decided, “Hey, why not?” And then kept cruising until there was a spot to pull back into regular traffic.

Either way, it’s a head-scratcher.
