Body washes up on island with ID belonging to man missing since April, SC cops say

Human remains along with a wallet and identification belonging to a Georgia man who went missing in April were found on an island in South Carolina, according to authorities.

Deputies with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report on Sept. 20 that human remains and personal belongings had washed ashore on Jones Island, a small South Carolina island in the Savannah River just across the border with Georgia, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. The body was found in an area that is only accessible by boat.

On Sept. 21, the Tybee Island Police Department in Georgia announced on Facebook that the human remains discovered on Jones Island had been found with identification belonging to Corey Joseph White, a 44-year-old man who was last seen on April 29. Tybee Island is about 10 miles southeast of Jones Island.

White is a Tybee Island resident who is known for working around the water, according to the Tybee Island Police Department. His last-known job was serving as a crew member on a shrimp boat.

White’s family members reported him missing on May 5 and noted that most of his personal belongings had been left behind at his home.

The Tybee Island Police Department shared a post on Facebook on May 6 asking for the public’s help looking for White. The post was shared 849 times.

Angie White posted on Facebook on Sept. 21 that a body had been found on Jones Island that was believed to be Corey White.

“This is very overwhelming to write,” she wrote. “This is a hard time for my family.”

A Facebook user named Tina Hayslip commented on the post that Corey White was “one of the best, (most) funny, sweet guys I’ve ever known.”

The remains have been sent to a coroner’s office for identification, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said.
