Brian Laundrie – update: Gabby Petito memorial removed as forensic anthropologist results may take weeks

A memorial to Gabby Petito has been removed from in front of Brian Laundrie’s parents’ home by North Port city officials, almost two months since she was first reported missing.

Meanwhile, a forensic anthropologist who is analysing Mr Laundrie’s remains may take “two to three weeks” to discover how he died, the Laundrie’s attorney Steven Bertolino has said.

Police investigating the deaths of Ms Petito and Mr Laundrie have denied “false reports” that the DNA of human remains found in Florida last week did not match the young man’s. A spokesman for the North Port police department also said there was a “very good possibility” that Mr Laundrie was dead two days after Ms Petito was reported missing.

A medical examiner has confirmed the remains were Mr Laundrie’s, and no DNA analysis has been conducted yet, said North Port Police in a statement posted to Twitter.

The FBI confirmed Mr Laundrie’s identity through dental records, suggesting he had been dead for a significant period of time before his remains were found. His belongings, which include a notebook and a backpack, were described as “salvageable” and may yet provide further clues.

Meanwhile, Steven Bertolino, the lawyer for Chris and Roberta Laundrie said Mr Laundrie would be cremated without a funeral. His parents acknowledged the death of their son in a short and unemotional statement, released through their lawyer, and asked for privacy.

The Petito-Schmidt family attorney, Rick Stafford, has said they would not make any statements on the identification of Ms Petito’s fiance until they were “emotionally ready”.

Brian Laundrie’s parents have said he was “very upset” before he left his home and his father felt helpless when he could not stop him from leaving, according to their family lawyer.

Recounting the moments before Laundrie left his house for Florida’s Carlton reserves, Steven Bertolino told NBC News that Laundrie’s father wished he “did not let him go”.

“Brian was very upset when he left and Chris conveyed to me several times that you know, he wish he did not let him go but he could not stop,” Mr Bertolino said.

Where did Brian Laundrie’s Mustang go?

12:55 , Eleanor Sly

Authorities this week admitted to having confused Brian Laundrie for his mother, Roberta Laundrie, after Gabby Petito was reported missing.

According to authorities, they spotted Mr Laundrie leaving home on 13 September in a red Mustang.

Two days later the car returned, with authorities suggesting that they thought Mr Laundrie had come home with it.

The Laundrie’s lawyer, Steven Bertolino criticized the authorities saying: “It was [North Port police] that put the ticket on the Mustang at the park and if they saw Brian leave on Monday in the Mustang, which is news to me, then they should have been watching the Mustang and the park starting on Monday and they would have known it was Chris and Roberta that retrieved the Mustang from the park.”

He went on to add: "Now to be clear, none this may have made a difference with respect to Brian’s life but it certainly would have prevented all of the false accusations leveled by so many against Chris and Roberta.”

Could Brian Laundrie’s notebook found by FBI explain what happened to him?

Following the FBI’s announcement that a notebook of Brian Laundrie’s has been found, criminologists suggest it could contain answers about what happened to his fiancé Gabby Petito.

A number of items including a backpack and the notebook were located near human remains from the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park by investigators on Wednesday.

“Earlier today investigators found what appears to be human remains along with personal items, such as a backpack and notebook, belonging to Brian Laundrie,” said Tampa-based Special Agent Michael McPherson during a media conference that afternoon, explaining: “These items were found in an area that up until recently had been underwater.”

Police confusing Laundrie and mother may have lengthened search

11:55 , Eleanor Sly

Investigators confusing Brian Laundrie and his mother could be to blame for a long search which was estimated to have cost more than $1.2 million at the end of September.

North Port Police Department spokesperson, Josh Taylor defended the police’s mistake suggesting that Brian and Roberta are “kind of built similarly.”

The Laundrie family lawyer, Steve Bertolino, did not however agree with Mr Taylor’s statement.

He said: "Everyone makes mistakes. But Brian and Roberta are not ‘built’ the same.”

The attorney added that had the police watched the park and followed the Mustang, "it certainly would have prevented all of the false accusations leveled by so many against Chris and Roberta with respect to ‘hiding’ Brian or otherwise financing an ‘escape.’"

It is usually the case that journalists like to be first with the news.

Everybody loves a scoop. It’s good for you, it’s good for your news organisation and there is the quiet, sometimes smug satisfaction of having beaten your rivals.

Yet, we know, especially in the digital era, with the constant barrage of information being bombarded not just at the public but at journalists, there are real perils attached to this endeavour. Namely, that in the rush to be first, you end up getting things wrong.

Does Brian Laundrie’s family deserve privacy?

09:15 , Eleanor Sly

The discovery last week of Brian Laundrie’s remains in a Florida nature park only deepened the mystery surrounding the death of his fiancée, Gabby Petito, and Laundrie’s role in it. So far, forensic examination has not identified the cause of Laundrie’s death, and authorities have not revealed the contents of a notebook and backpack found at the scene.

Laundrie and Petito had set off on a cross-country trip together over the summer from which Gabby never returned. Laundrie traveled back to his parents’ home without her at the beginning of September, only to go missing himself two days later. Petito’s disappearance and death and the strange circumstances of Laundrie’s return quickly became one of those headline-grabbing crimes that galvanize the nation’s attention.

Laundrie’s parents, anticipating a media circus at any funeral they might hold for their son, released a statement this week through as family attorney that his body would be cremated and his ashes returned to them. They appealed for privacy so that they could mourn the death of their son privately, but do they deserve it asks Austin Sarat.

A forensic anthropologist who is analysing Brian Laundrie’s skeletal remains is likely to take “two to three weeks” to find out the manner and cause of his death, the lawyer Steven Bertolino has said.

After the medical examiner conducted an autopsy on the partial remains found in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park and the results were inconclusive, the remains were sent to a forensic anthropologist.

After a comparison of dental records, the FBI confirmed that the remains belonged to Brian Laundrie.

Initial post-mortem examination results on Laundrie’s remains inconclusive

Wednesday 27 October 2021 10:01 , Jon Sharman

The initial autopsy on the remains of Brian Laundrie did not uncover a cause of his death and a more intensive examination will be done, a lawyer for his family has said.

Mr Laundrie's skeletal remains found in a Florida nature preserve were identified last week using dental records, according to the FBI.

Mr Laundrie was the subject of a manhunt for more than a month as investigators searched for clues in the slaying of his girlfriend, Gabby Petito, during their cross-country van trip together.

Steve Bertolino, the Laundries' attorney, said in text messages that he was told by police the autopsy by the Sarasota County medical examiner did not produce concrete results on Brian Laundrie's death.

"I was told the manner and cause of death were not determined and the remains were sent to an anthropologist (for) further evaluation," Mr Bertolino said.

The medical examiner's office declined comment Monday, as did the FBI office in Denver that is leading the probe.
