Car found with body inside may belong to missing Georgia woman, authorities say

A body was found inside a car thought to belong to an Atlanta-area woman who went missing earlier this month, according to Georgia authorities.

The discovery comes nearly two weeks after relatives said Yolanda Brown, 53, left her home in Covington to meet up with an acquaintance, local outlets reported. She drove her 2020 black Chevy Impala to a pub on Sept. 2 — and never returned.

A car matching the description of Brown’s was found crashed in a wooded area near the shoulder of Interstate 20 on Monday, Sept. 12, Georgia State Patrol confirmed to McClatchy News.

“The female driver was found to be deceased,” troopers said.

Newton County deputies haven’t confirmed if the car belongs to Brown, but said there were “some similarities,” WAGA reported. The identity of the person found dead hasn’t been released.

“The vehicle was towed to (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) and they’re doing a thorough investigation,” Sgt. Jack Redlinger with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office told the news station.

McClatchy News reached out to the sheriff’s office for an update Tuesday, Sept. 13, and was awaiting a response.

Brown vanished after leaving Irish Bred Pub in Hapeville, where family members said she met with someone she was talking to online, local outlets reported. Surveillance video shows a man get out of Brown’s car after they talked for almost two hours, according to WSB-TV.

He returned to his car and then followed her out of the parking lot, according to the news station.

Brown’s relatives contacted the man, who hasn’t been publicly identified, and said he told them he was following Brown to her home but lost sight of her, WSB-TV reported.

“She doesn’t meet strangers,” Brown’s sister, Mickie Nutall, told WXIA last week. “She always wants to be someone’s friend. And, I’m 100 percent convinced that her friend-making is what led to her being missing right now.”

The incident remains under investigation.

Newton County is about 40 miles southeast of Atlanta.
