Thousands of iPhone 6 handsets are affected by ‘touch disease’ – where a flickering bar appears at the top of the screen, and the touchscreen slowly stops working.
Apple has finally admitted to the problem – putting up a page for Multi-Touch Repair Program for iPhone 6 Plus on its U.S. site.
This year, the problem – affecting iPhone 6 handsets – has been so widespread that repair shops have been inundated with ‘touch disease’ handsets, according to repair specialist iFixit.
Apple says, ‘Apple has determined that some iPhone 6 Plus devices may exhibit display flickering or Multi-Touch issues after being dropped multiple times on a hard surface and then incurring further stress on the device.’
Apple is offering reimbursements for repairs for some customers – although it’s not clear what the situation is in the UK.
Speaking to iFixit, Missouri repair specialist Jason Villmer said, ‘This issue is widespread enough that I feel like almost every iPhone 6/6+ has a touch of it (no pun intended) and are like ticking bombs just waiting to act up.’
Repair specialists iFixit says that the problem is not fixed by replacing the touchscreen – because it’s to do with two chips inside the phone.
