Georgia woman kidnapped from job, killed by ex-boyfriend after chase, police say

A woman was kidnapped from her job and fatally shot by a man described as her ex-boyfriend after he led police on a car chase in Georgia Sunday night, authorities said.

Around 11 p.m. local time, the Fayetteville Police Department received 911 calls saying a woman was being kidnapped from her job at a fast-food restaurant in Fayetteville, Georgia, about 25 miles south of Atlanta, Fayetteville police said in a news release.

According to police, 911 callers said a "male subject had entered the restaurant and took his ex-girlfriend, an employee of the restaurant, at gunpoint.”

“An additional caller advised that the suspect left with the victim in a red Chevrolet Camaro,” police added.

Police identified the man as Cameron Ja'Michael Hopkins, 20.

Man flees from police, shoots at officers

Police spotted the Camaro on their way to the restaurant and followed Hopkins to confirm if it was the vehicle reported, police said.

"The vehicle began to flee from officers in the area of Banks Road in Fayetteville and a vehicle pursuit was initiated,” Fayetteville police said. “The pursuit left Fayette County and entered Clayton County via McDonough Road.”

When Hopkins turned into a driveway at a nearby high school, police used a PIT maneuver – a police tactic used to stop a fleeing vehicle by crashing into the car – which caused Hopkins to stop, police said.

Hopkins then fired “several shots inside the vehicle” and at officers, who were inside their vehicles.

“Officers were able to exit their vehicle and take cover while the suspect and victim remained inside the vehicle,” police said. “Officers began giving commands for the suspect to exit the vehicle which were ignored.”

Fayette County Sheriff’s Department deputies deployed an irritant into the vehicle, which caused Hopkins to exit the car and he was arrested.

Woman fatally shot, investigation ongoing

The victim had several gunshot wounds and succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Hopkins is being charged with kidnapping and aggravated assault. The Clayton County Police Department is handling the homicide investigation since it occurred inside Clayton County, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and the victim’s name was withheld to “allow the family to be notified,” police said.
