Hikers discover human remains in ‘steep, remote area’ near California creek, cops say
Hikers stumbled upon human remains that may have belonged to a man missing for months, California deputies said.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office got a call from hikers on Sunday, Aug. 28, who believed they found human remains. They reported being in a “steep, remote area” near Oregon Creek.
Officials rushed to the area and recovered the remains and personal belongings that were found in the area, the sheriff’s office said.
Rescuers scoured the area the next two days in search of additional remains or belongings.
“Yuba County Search and Rescue conducted an extensive search along a cliff side,” deputies said in a news release. “During the search, they located additional human remains and a maroon GMC Acadia.”
The car was registered to Dean Penn, who was reported missing in May, deputies said.
Officials are working to identify the remains using rapid DNA technology. Penn’s family has been working with detectives to provide comparison DNA, deputies said.
“This investigation is ongoing and further information will be released when available,” deputies said. “If you have any information regarding this investigation, please contact the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office.”
Oregon Creek is in Camptonville, about 80 miles northeast of Sacramento.
