Kate Garraway has said her husband Derek Draper is back home following another stay in hospital after his COVID fight, and that the "fight goes on".

The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband spent more than a year in hospital after falling ill with the coronavirus in 2020, and earlier this year he was admitted again with sepsis.

Opening up on ITV's Lorraine, Garraway said it was "very tough" on Draper but that it was also hard for those around him.

And she admitted she feared people would get "fed up".

“It is a long onslaught, it's a long onslaught and I can see he has better days, he has worse days,” she said.

"He’s thankfully at home now. It's been a long battle to get him back home again."

"I think it’s very tough on him and it’s very tough on the people around him," added the broadcaster, who married the former political adviser in 2005.

Garraway went on: "I can’t help but think all the people around me, people at GMB and the radio as well, must be fed up to the back teeth, and that is the problem, I think, if you are caring or if you have a long-term situation, that it doesn’t go away quickly, and the fight goes on.”

Host Lorraine Kelly and Garraway's GMB co-star Ben Shephard told her that wasn't the case.

Garraway said everybody has challenges.

She added: "That's the thing that I’ve been really aware of, is that, I know sometimes people say, 'Oh she’s talking about that again’... I don’t want to go on about it because what I’ve learnt, and this is a kind of negative positive, is you only really know what it feels like until you are there.

"You imagine it but you don't know.

“I now get contacted every day, which makes me feel less isolated, by genuinely thousands of people saying, ‘Please say more because we are struggling’."
