The Prodigy star Keith Flint died as the result of hanging, an inquest has heard.

The 49-year-old was found dead at his home in the Essex hamlet of North End on March 4.

Coroner’s officer Lynsey Chaffe told a two-minute hearing in Chelmsford on Monday that Flint’s provisional medical cause of death is hanging.

She said: “Police attended, all protocols were followed and his death was confirmed as not suspicious.”

A post-mortem examination was carried out at Broomfield Hospital on March 7. Ms Chaffe said the case remains under investigation while toxicology reports are awaited.

A devastated Liam Howlett, Flint’s bandmate in The Prodigy, revealed to fans last week that he had taken his own life.

In a post to Instagram, he said: “The news is true , I can’t believe I’m saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend.

“I’m shell shocked , f**kin angry , confused and heart broken….. r.i.p brother Liam.”

The band also posted yesterday that messages of support from fans have ‘kept us going’.

The band announced last week that they are cancelling all their forthcoming shows, in the wake of Flint’s death.

“Following the tragic death of Keith Flint all forthcoming Prodigy shows will be cancelled with immediate effect. TheProdigyHQ,” they said in a statement.

The band had only recently released their seventh studio album, No Tourists, in November last year, and had embarked on a world tour.

Flint, initially one of the band’s two dancers when they first formed in 1990, later became integral to their success, performing vocals on number one singles Firestarter and Breathe.

He was also a motorbike enthusiast, forming his own racing team, Team Traction Control, competing in the Isle of Man TT and the British Supersport Championship.

Following news of his death, a host of music industry figures paid tribute to him.

Richard Russell, the founder of XL Recordings, the label to first sign in the band, said:
