Kurdish Forces Discover Islamic State Tunnel in Mosque Outside Mosul

Kurdish Peshmerga forces uncovered a tunnel made by Islamic State fighters in a mosque in Sheikh Amir, a village on the road to Mosul, on Wednesday, October 19, after liberating the area from the militant group.

Iraqi forces have discovered an extensive network of underground tunnels since launching a campaign on Monday to reclaim Mosul, Islamic State’s last major stronghold in Iraq.

Kurdish peshmerga fighters found an underground tunnel in Badana, one of the villages recently liberated east of Mosul, on Wednesday. Footage of the tunnel, released by Kurdistan 24, shows fresh food and other supplies hidden inside.

The tunnels are believed to be used by the militant group as supply lines and communication networks, but are also used to avoid detection by US-led coalition airstrikes. Credit: Facebook/Rudaw
