Skeletal remains of man and woman found in shallow grave in Georgetown County identified

The Georgetown County Coroner’s Office identified Tuesday a man and woman whose skeletal remains were found in the Choppee area.

The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office said the remains were recovered Saturday from a shallow grave in a wooded area off Whitmire Road in the Choppee community.

Coroner Chase Ridgeway identified the two victims as Melvin Wise, 57, and Andrene Stewart, 41, both of New York, after conducting autopsies Tuesday. Wise was a former resident of Georgetown County, the coroner’s office said in a Facebook post.

The autopsies confirmed that both victims died from gunshot wounds and the manner of death for both is homicide, the post said.

The case is being investigated as a double homicide, according to Georgetown County spokesperson Jason Lesley.

The skeletal remains are the third to be found in Georgetown County in the past year, Lesely confirmed. Brittanee Drexel’s remains were found in May, and another set of human remains were found out toward Andrews in the woods, he said.

The investigation into the deaths is ongoing.
