Tom Hanks Talks About Watching Clinton-Trump Debate With SNL Cast

Tom Hanks stopped by the Today show, where, among other things, he talked about hosting Saturday Night Live last weekend, particularly playing off the third and final presidential debate. Hanks watched the debate with the cast and writers of SNL in preparation for the opening scene of the show on Saturday.

Hanks said, “Wednesday night, we’re watching the debate on the 17th floor of 30 Rock. The entire building’s shut down because everyone’s locked onto monitors. And for 90 minutes, we’re going, ‘Hey, that’s good. We can use that. Alec will go nuts on this.’”

Both Trump and Clinton gave the cast plenty to work with just by being themselves; Trump with his tendency to say outlandish things you wouldn’t expect to hear from any other politician, and Clinton with her tendency to quickly change the subject when asked a question she doesn’t want to answer. But at the very end, Trump gave the cast a gift when he refused to say whether he’d accept the results of the election, claiming that it’s already rigged.

“We think, ‘Hey, we’ve done pretty good.’ But then in the last 30 seconds, a gift unto … ‘I’ll keep you in suspense. I’ll let you know.’ I thought, holy cow, this is the high country. They were very happy up there,” Hanks said.
