Toronto police charge man, 20, in Yorkdale shooting

Toronto police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with a shooting at Yorkdale mall and charged him with a number of offences including two counts of attempted murder.

Police said they arrested Zion Sankar-Beharry outside of Trenton, Ont., on Monday without incident, following the shooting at the mall last Thursday afternoon. He appeared in court on Tuesday and the case will return to court on Friday.

Sankar-Beharry is facing eleven charges, including attempted murder, reckless discharge of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police allege an altercation between two groups of men in the mall led to one man firing a gun at least twice around 2:50 p.m. last Thursday.

The shooting caused panicked shoppers and store employees to scramble for cover, with hundreds eventually rushing out of the large building.

No one was injured, but the sprawling facility, known as one of Toronto's more upscale shopping locations, was evacuated and shut down as officers combed the area for evidence.

Shortly after the incident, police announced they were looking for Sankar-Beharry.

Police said they received many calls and tips as they investigated.
