Video: Man Tears Apart Quran as Protesters Disrupt School Board Meeting in Mississauga

A school board meeting in Mississauga, Ontario, boiled over on Wednesday evening as protesters yelled Islamophobic statements and one man tore pages from a copy of the Quran.

The Toronto Star reported about 80 protesters attended the school board meeting to campaign against a 20-year Peel District School Board that provides Muslim students space and time to pray on Fridays. The video shows the protesters being loudly confronted by a parent, Christina Dixon, at the meeting. Dixon has since published a statement on Facebook about her experience.

School board officials collected the remains of the Quran and reached out to local Imams for advice on what to do with it. Brampton Makki Masjid imam Shaykh Omar Subedar said in a Facebook post that he would bury the religious text.

The day after the meeting, Education Minister Mitzie Hunter and Children and Youth Services Minister Michael Coteau released a statement backing the board’s policy.
