‘Westworld’ Recap: Is This Real Life?

Sunday’s Westworld had its first full realization for one of the hosts that they may be playthings in a larger world. Maeve was haunted by flashbacks in which she was senselessly shot by a blood-thirsty visitor. She remembered being shot in her abdomen and later seeing a cleaning crew in hazmat-type suits hover over her.

She sought the help of Hector, a bad-guy host, who was freed from jail by the Man in Black. Maeve asked him about the mysterious hooded figures, and he explained that they were there to do the devil’s work, an interesting perspective from the hosts. Explaining that she was shot, she asked him to cut her with a knife. He found a bullet and asked, “What does it mean?” She replied, “That I’m not crazy after all … and that none of this matters.” After having seen the behind-the-scenes of the facility, it seemed Maeve was the first of all the hosts to understand her own situation.

Elsewhere in the park, the Man in Black continued his search for the maze. Oddly enough, Bernard Lowe decided to give Dolores more autonomy and sent her toward the mysterious maze as well. She was helped along by William, who was white-hatting on his own journey.

Westworld airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
