Anna Delvey's prison sentence has just been changed

Anna Delvey (aka Anna Sorokin) – whose story inspired the hit Netflix series, Inventing Anna – had been released from a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in New York. The fake heiress has been detained at the facility since March 2021 when she was arrested for overstaying her visa. She previously served just under two years in prison for financially defrauding affluent New Yorkers.

To recap, the Russian-born con-artist became a household name earlier this year when the Netflix adaptation of her crimes landed on screens. Now, she has been bailed out of ICE on a $10,000 (£8,831) bond but will remain under house arrest and wear an electronic tag. Delvey has reportedly been banned from using social media as well.

"We are extremely gratified by the court’s decision today to release Anna Sorokin," her lawyer Duncan Levin said. "The judge rightfully recognised that Anna is not a danger to the community."

Levin continued: "While there are still a few hurdles to jump through on her release conditions, Anna is thrilled to be getting out so she can focus on appealing her wrongful conviction."

Delvey – played by Ozark's Julia Garner in Inventing Anna – arrived in New York in 2013 and posed as a rich German heiress with a multi-million euro fortune. For several years she lived the high life amongst New York's elite, travelling on private jets and racking up costly hotel bills without ever paying.

In 2017, Delvey's web of lies caught up with her and she was jailed for her financial crimes. Just one month after her release from prison in February 2021, the 31-year-old was taken into ICE and has remained there until now.

Reacting to Netflix's portrayal of her crimes, Delvey told Cosmopolitan: "I don't think I ordered people around as much. I think I'm more self-aware of the way I come across. Not all the time, but I just don't think I'm so brazen and shameless."

She continued, "I personally moved on a very long time ago and I'm absolutely not in the same place, but I'm also being affected by the way the world sees me and by what people think of me. I exist in relation to everybody else and to the world, I don't just exist on my own."

Earlier this year, sources claimed that Delvey was being deported back to Germany.
