The idea of a Domino's location in Italy is a bit peculiar given the country's love for an authentic slice. But in 2015, the pizza chain opened shops in the country, and let's just say things haven't gone swimmingly. Now, after less than a decade in Italy, Domino's has served its last pie in the birthplace of pizza, Bloomberg reports. In total, 29 Domino's locations in Italy have shuttered.

Although Italians are pretty particular when it comes to their slices—the city of Naples is credited with inventing pizza—the Domino's closures were more so a result of rising competition with other pizza-delivery services. A statement from ePizza, the company Domino's entered into a franchise agreement with in Italy, shed a bit more insight on Domino's decision to close its doors.

“We attribute the issue to the significantly increased level of competition in the food delivery market with both organized chains and ‘mom & pop’ restaurants delivering food, to service and restaurants reopening post pandemic and consumers out and about with revenge spending,” said ePizza in the companies fourth-quarter 2021 earnings report, according to Bloomberg.

Prior to this week's closure announcement, a number of customers turned to the @dominos_italia Instagram account for answers about why their local Domino's locations had suddenly shuttered. And most recently, users offered their condolences and shared RIPs under the comments section of the account's latest post, which dates back to July 13.
