Meghan Markle Says Andie MacDowell’s ‘Perfect, Little Curly’ Hairdo Inspired Her Own Childhood Hair
Meghan Markle revealed that Andie MacDowell’s character in Four Wedding and a Funeral inspired her childhood haircut.
“All I wanted was that perfect curly little haircut,” the Duchess of Sussex said during her surprise appearance on Ellen last week.
But the cut quickly became “a real bummer,” Markle recalled. “Everyone forgot to tell me, ‘You have ethnic hair.’”
Andie MacDowell’s hair has been a source of inspiration for generations now—and she once even managed to make an impression on royalty. During a surprise appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week, Meghan Markle revealed that she idolized MacDowell as a tween.
During the interview, the Duchess of Sussex shared a self-portrait that she drew as a child for a book called A Face Without Freckles Is a Night Without Stars. “I was 10 or 11, maybe, and the reason my hair looked like that then was because I was obsessed with Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings and a Funeral,” Markle, 40, recalled. “All I wanted was that perfect, little curly haircut.”
“I asked my mom, went to the hairdresser, and got it. And on that first day, I was like, ‘This is amazing. I look like Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings and a Funeral!” she continued. “And then it was as though everyone forgot to tell me, ‘You have ethnic hair. You are not going to look like Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings and a Funeral,’” Markle said with a laugh.
“That’s what it ended up evolving into,” she said, pointing to herself on the screen. “I’d go to school, and they said I looked like Krusty the Clown from The Simpsons. It was a real bummer.” But, of course, we feel compelled to note that Markle did not look like Krusty the Clown (as if she could ever look anything less than regal?!).
Although the future Duchess of Sussex didn’t quite stick the landing with her haircut back then, both she and MacDowell are still turning heads today. Particularly MacDowell, who just earlier this year debuted gray hair at the Cannes Film Festival, saying she “emphasized the wildness” in her natural look.
“I think it’s badass to embrace where you are [in life] and be fearless,” the Maid actress, 63, told InStyle last month. “That is exactly what I am doing. I am stepping right into where I am with no shame, and it feels good.”
“I feel better like this. Honestly, it’s exhausting to have to be something that you no longer are,” the Maid actress told Interview Magazine in October. “I was finally like, ‘You know what? I’m not young. And I’m OK with that. ... We’re beautiful at every age and glorious in our own way, and we have so much to offer. I feel so much more comfortable. It’s like I’ve taken a mask off or something.”
“In the past, it has been normal and acceptable [for society] to cut women off at age 40,” she said to InStyle. “We do have something unique to offer. You can’t be young forever, but you can always be considered beautiful, fashionable, and glamorous.”
If only the younger Markle could have heard those words!
