Mom shares photo of breast dimple that led to cancer diagnosis

When Sherrie Rhodes was diagnosed with breast cancer, the only symptom she had was small dimpling at the side of her breast. In effort to make other women aware, the mom of three, from East Yorkshire, U.K., shared photos of the dimpling — the only sign that something was wrong.

“Yesterday I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It came as a total shock as this dimpling (in the pic) is the only symptom I had,” Rhodes wrote in a post that has since gone viral.

Rhodes says she first noticed the dimpling at the end of June. Two days after, she went to her GP who referred her to the breast clinic.

“I went there just over a week ago and had a scan which revealed a mass, I then had a mammogram, which confirmed it, so (I) had some biopsy’s done the same day. I wasn’t too worried as there was no lump or anything,” she wrote. “Unfortunately it came back as breast cancer.”

The concerned mom hopes her photo will inspire other women to check their breasts regularly and not ignore anything that appears different.

“If I hadn’t seen a post like this previously, I wouldn’t have known that this dimpling was a sign of cancer. Please share and raise awareness.”

Rhodes’ post resonated with readers worldwide, as they praised the mom for bravely sharing her photo so soon after a diagnosis. Even her daughter, Lydia, wrote her mother a special message:

“I’m so proud of you mum for sharing this! It has come to a shock to us all but we will get through it and you will fight it. We will all be here every step of the way! I love you so bloody much.”

According to the American Cancer Society, the most common symptom of breast cancer is a new breast mass or lump. The lump is typically painless and has irregular edges, but it can also be tender and rounded. Other possible breast cancer symptoms can include nipple retraction, nipple pain, redness/irritation, discharge or dimpling.
