For “Married at First Sight” reality TV star Jamie Otis, October is a special month. It serves as a reminder of Johnathan Edward, the tiny baby she lost to a miscarriage earlier this year.

“October is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month. I can’t sleep well tonight so I blogged about my sweet boy, Johnathan Edward,” she says in an Instagram post.

The accompanying image is of Otis and her husband in a hospital bed hovering over a tiny baby in a towel.

“I realize there is a great stigma associated with sharing photos of your baby who was born too early and has already gone to heaven so I want to say sorry if this offends you. However, if there’s one thing my husband has taught me it’s this: ‘Don’t live life trying NOT to offend anyone and trying to please everyone.'”

Otis is sharing the image in support of Infant Loss Awareness month. According to the post, miscarriage is something that affects one in four women but is rarely spoken about openly or publicly.

“Miscarriage is the last thing people want to talk about. I want to change that,” she says.

Like many moms-to-be, Otis was incredibly excited to find out that she was pregnant, taking creative announcement pictures and charting her bump progress through social media. By posting this image, as heartbreaking as it may be, she’s hoping to take away some of the stigma of miscarriage and let other moms who have suffered a similar loss feel like they are not alone in wanting to celebrate the lives they created — even if they were short-lived.

“I hope by me sharing my sweet boy, Johnny (as Doug and I call him), you’ll realize that he’s a harmless, helpless baby who deserves to be remembered, not hidden away because his image may offend someone.”
