As a minimal makeup gal, my beauty routine rarely goes beyond mascara, a brow pencil and tinted moisturizer. I love the idea of a cat eye and contoured cheek; however, in the debate of sleep versus makeup, eight hours of shut-eye always seems to win out.

With that being said, when I love, I love big. And for lip products, this means I own (read: hoard) dozens of glosses, liners, lipsticks and balms, all bought with the intention of making myself look presentable sans any other makeup.

As a devout follower of Christie Brinkley's beauty routine, I was excited to try out the model's go-to lip plumper: the Double the Plump Lip Plump & Sculpt from SBLA Beauty.

On sale for $42 CAD/$31 USD.

Ending soon: SBLA 40% off sale

SBLA's Memorial Day long weekend sale has been extended — but not for long! Until tonight (June 1), shoppers (including us Canadians!) can save 40 per cent off sitewide at SBLA — including on Christie Brinkley's go-to plumping lip gloss.

SBLA Beauty Double the Plump Lip Plump & Sculpt: The details

A shopper-favourite from SBLA, the Double the Plump lip plumper promises "fuller, firmer, hydrated, sculpted, healthy lips" — without injections or cosmetic treatments.

The gloss is formulated with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, a triple peptide blend and SBLA's phytonutrient-based LIPerfection.

It's designed to visibly plump the lips, enhance shape, reduce fine lines, hydrate and increase lip fullness for up to four hours.

Double the Plump is available in two shades: Christie, a natural pink, and Randi, a nude rose.

What I thought

The good: The 69-year-old model wrote in an Instagram post that SBLA's Plump & Sculpt gave her "immediate results," and upon first glance, I would agree.

With lip plumpers, I think you often see the results you want to see. However, my lips, especially my top lip, did seem fuller with the SBLA gloss.

The product went on smoothly and produced a slight tingly sensation, not unlike other lip plumpers. Overall, I felt it gave my pout a bit of a bee-stung look while still looking natural.

Pros:

  • Smooth application

  • Lips appeared fuller

  • Light, easy-to-wear colour

The bad: "Bad" seems too dramatic, so we'll go with the "whatever."

Colour-wise, I expected more. It's a pretty colour, but unless you're lining your lips underneath, you can expect to see more sheen than pigment.

I won't lie about the smell: it's not good. I can't quite put my finger on the scent — but it's not roses, that's for sure.

As for longevity, SBLA's four-hour claim seems like a stretch. Admittedly, I ate and drank with the gloss on, but I would say the plumping effect lasted closer to an hour than four.

Cons:

  • Weird smell

  • Minimal pigment

  • Plumping effect doesn't last

'Works like magic'

Hailed as one of Christie Brinkley's go-to makeup essentials, the Double The Plump lip gloss has earned the approval of SBLA reviewers — with an average rating of 4.6 stars.

It "works like magic," lauds one reviewer.

"[I saw] instant results," writes another. It's "fabulous!"

The plumping gloss "makes my pout stand out," says a third SBLA shopper. "It truly makes your lips look fuller!"

While the lip plumper has earned dozens of five-star reviews from shoppers, some customers share my sentiments that while they saw a difference, the results were short-lived.

According to one reviewer, the lip plumper is "good," but they "wish it lasted longer."

The verdict: Is it worth it?

Is it worth it — that is the question. Overall, I liked it. My lips felt and appeared fuller and the gloss gave me that slight bee-stung look that often requires a doctor's office to achieve. However, at $70 CAD/$52 USD — $42 CAD/$31 USD on sale — the Lip Plump & Sculpt isn't exactly affordable. Therefore, my recommendation would be this: if you want long-lasting results, you're better off elsewhere. However, if you're willing to keep your expectations within reach (and re-apply regularly), SBLA's Double the Plump is a fun product to keep in your makeup bag.
